Archetypes in Psychology: You’re Not One Self, You’re a Cast of Selves (How to Spot & Work With Them for Real Transformation)

In depth psychologyarchetypes are universal inner roles, characters, or patterns of behavior that live inside your psyche (and in our collective unconscious as human beings). Think of them as the mythic blueprints you didn’t consciously choose, but definitely are influenced by and act upon whether on a conscious or subconscious level.

These can shape your:

Learning how to spot and work with archetypes is one of the most powerful tools for transformation- especially when you’re doing shadow work, identity shifting, or reclaiming authenticity!

What Are Archetypes in DEPTH Psychology?

The concept of archetypes was popularized by Carl Jung, who believed the human psyche wasn’t just a blank slate- it was shaped by inherited, symbolic patterns that transcend culture and time.

“Archetypes are the inherited patterns of being. They are the psychic instincts of humanity.”

-Carl Jung

Jung described archetypes as “universal and inherited patterns which… constitute the structure of the unconscious.” They’re like psychic instincts: automatic, ancient, and highly recognizable across culture/people (ie: the Mother, the Warrior, etc.)

Here are some common archetypes that show up a lot in real life and shadow work (these aren’t Jung’s official top hits—his core ones include the Shadow, Persona, Anima/Animus, and Self—but modern psychology and inner work draw on these vibrant examples because they land hard):

Some common archetypes that are likely DEFINITELY at play in your psyche:

  • The Caretaker (always rescuing, never resting)

  • The Rebel (burn-it-all-down energy)

  • The Inner Child (wounded or wonder-filled)

  • The Magician (manifestor who sometimes checks out/engages in escapism)

  • The Good Girl (performer of perfection)

  • The Saboteur (keeps you “safe” by self-destructing)

Each archetype brings a gift, a shadow, and an associated script or pattern- unconscious behaviors that play out unless consciously interrupted!

Why Archetype Work Is a Game-Changer

Working with archetypes let you externalize your patterns- to see them, name them, and eventually redirect them.

Instead of saying, “Ugh, I always self-sabotage,” you say:

  • “That’s my Inner Critic trying to keep me safe.”

  • “My Rescuer is over-functioning again.”

  • “My Wild One is underfed and acting out.”

This shift from judgment to curiosity creates space for real change not just awareness loops!

If you’ve worked with my Meeting the Shadow Guide or read Shadow Work for Hot Messes, you know we don’t kill off parts- we get to know them, name their role, and redirect their power!

Please note- Working with archetypes can ALSO be used for chaos magic and CALLING IN new energies and identities, but we will cover that in another post at another time!

How to Identify Your Dominant Archetypes

1. Notice the Patterns

What stories repeat in your life? Particularly the ones that feel emotionally charged, like betrayal, burnout, invisibility, or chaos? If you were in a movie which character would you be (hot mess, older sister, hero, victim, etc.)

Each recurring theme is likely linked to an archetype running a loop and patterning your behavior and perceptions in the background)

2. Use Role Mapping

Ask: “Who is acting right now?” when you feel triggered, avoidant, performative, or chaotic. Then describe them like a character in a movie.

“She’s the one who smiles through discomfort, makes herself small, and always says yes.” (Hello, The Good Girl.)

3. Track Their Shadow

Every archetype has a distorted or wounded form.

  • Caretaker → Self-erasure

  • Rebel → Destruction without direction

  • Magician → Disconnection from the body/escapism

4. Invite New Archetypes

Just because one part has been dominant doesn’t mean you’re stuck there. Try asking:

“What archetype would feel more honest right now? What energies could I use a little more of?”

Try on:

  • The Hero

  • The Pheonix/Dark Horse Survivor

  • The Empowered/Boundaried Healer

Rituals to Engage Your Archetypes

✅ Dialogue Journaling: Write a letter from one archetype to another, write a letter TO one of your archetypes, or FROM an archtype

✅ Creative Activation: Dress, dance, or draw like a new archetype. Channel your Embodied Artist. Move like The Untamed. You can also “invoke” or work with energies as part of your chaos magic practice, as described in the video above.

✅ Integration Script: “I see you, [Archetype]. I know what your purpose is, how you are influencing my life, and I choose to work WITH you for our highest good”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What are archetypes in psychology?
They’re universal, symbolic inner characters that shape our thoughts, behavior, and identity. Carl Jung believed we inherit these as psychic blueprints.

How do I find my archetypes?
Track your dominant emotional and behavioral patterns, then name the inner “role” or character playing out. This gives you language to disrupt it.

What’s the benefit of working with archetypes?
You stop personalizing patterns and start relating to them with clarity, compassion, and direction. Archetype work makes your inner life visible and malleable. You can also “borrow” or use “energetic cosplay” by intentionally calling in archetypes

Archetype work isn’t just “energetic cosplay”, but full shadow/psychic reclamation! Are you ready to write a new story?
